The South Dakota Catholic Conference supports the passage of HB 1248, a bill that requires facilities to report to the state department of health the total numbers of embryos created, stored, and destroyed each year.  At the moment of conception, a new human life exists.  Each life is an unrepeatable wonder, entitled to be known and loved, and treated with dignity and respect.  The Church teaches that children have the right to be conceived in an act of love between their mother and father; yet, even for those children conceived in a laboratory, their great worth is no less.  Through HB 1248, the state would recognize that at the very least, it needs reliable data about such nascent and vulnerable human life.
